Critical Arctic Studies

The Thematic Network on Critical Arctic Studies aims to strengthen and promote multidisciplinary, critical studies of the Arctic.

Much of the current social science-based research is “state science” with a strong orientation towards data collection and societal problem-solving. However, many of the current societal challenges and problems are complex, intertwined “wicked problems” without easy solutions; thus, new critical approaches, conceptual, and methodological tools are needed to understand them.

Goals

The thematic network provides a forum for critically oriented researchers working in various fields and addressing diverse topical issues.  Critical research in this context means challenging mainstream, simplified, and stereotypical understandings of the Arctic; questioning the basis of current depictions of the region and its development; engaging with more diverse standpoints and voices to facilitate reflective assessments of policies; and elevating the importance of the area and its future on a global scale.

The Critical Arctic Studies (CAS) TN aims to promote education, research, and supervision for the growth of critical Arctic studies, and to provide a forum for cooperation and networking among scholars at various career stages. The TN activities are suitable for a range of disciplines, including political science, sociology, anthropology, gender studies, Sami and Indigenous studies, environmental management, legal studies, geography, and others.
