Conference Goals
The aim is to foster collaboration between researchers and ensure knowledge exchange in the field of men’s underrepresentation in communal occupations with a specific focus on nursing and health care by organizing an interdisciplinary conference for researchers and practitioners working on this and related topics in August 2025 at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, in Tromsø, Northern Norway.
The Nordic Gender Conference on Men's Underrepresentation in Communal Occupations will accept approximately 30 applicants to attend the conference. The conference invites contributions on topics including: gender segregated labor markets, pink-collar jobs, personal and societal causes and consequences of the care crisis, challenges faced by men in communal roles, stereotypes and social norms, gender differences in self-perceptions and identity, career aspirations in childhood and adolescence, drop-out rates in communal degree programs, experiences of men in counter-stereotypical roles, masculinity and masculinity threat, benefits of diversity for patients and work environments, and recruitment of men to female-dominated jobs including nursing, social work, teaching, and childcare.
The interdisciplinary conference will consist of two parts: on the first two days, international scholars from psychology, health, education, economics, and sociology who study the underrepresentation of men in communal occupations and related topics will be invited to present their research in form of scientific presentations and posters to foster discussion about this topic.
On the third day, practitioners from Nordic countries will be invited to present their work on how to engage men in communal occupations. Conference participants can choose whether to attend all three days or just the scientific part of the conference (i.e., first two days).
Researchers from all countries are encouraged to join the conference. The conference is funded by the Research Council of Norway (project leader: Prof. Dr. Sarah Martiny). There are no conference fees.
